I was driving home from OBU on Friday thinking about my room and how unhappy I have been with it ever since starting college. This will be my first time, excluding short breaks and weekend trips, I will have lived at home since school. I don't have a desk and have been using a propped up card table for my computer. I spent much of the trip trying to rearrange my room mentally to fit a desk. Somehow, I ended up planning an almost complete redesign.
The previous owners used my room as an office. When we moved in, it contained a built in desk and a huge corkboard wall. We ripped out the desk, attached a storage bench in its place, and I covered the wall with pictures and various keepsake items. I had an ikea bed with drawer storage that I fondly referred to as my "John and Yoko bed" because it rested on the floor. This set up worked great all through out high school, but it wasn't really working for me lately.
The redo was pretty easy and didn't take more than a couple of hours. I'm a huge nerd, and never have enough space to store all the books I buy. So what better solution than to build my bed out of bookshelves? We bought two Expedit black shelves from Ikea (it took about half an hour to assemble both) and placed them parallel to eachother. We put some slates from my old twin bed underneath and rested the head of the bed on a little bench.
The bookshelves are a little longer than I would have hoped, but give the room some extra seating which is nice.
I used some left over fabric to cover the cork board wall (the cheap push pin fix is only temporary). Add some awesome new bedding from Target and behold: Much more space, and a little nook surrounded by books!
Now, if I could just find a desk...
